Badminton originated from a sporting event called Battledore and Shuttlecock. Two players would hit a feathered shuttlecock to each other using tiny rackets. Many years later it received the game's official name of Badminton. Today players are positioned on opposite sides of a net using their rackets to score points by striking a shuttlecock so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponent's half of the court. Point is gained when the shuttlecock strikes the ground on the opposite side. This game is played at International and Olympic levels but it is ideal for recreational backyard play.
